Creating Map Books with Data Driven Pages

A map book is a collection of pages printed or exported together. Many of the pages contain maps, but the book can also include title pages, overview maps, charts, graphs, tables, and other content. The maps for the book typically contain a series of individual maps at large map scale that cover a larger geographic area. This is also called an Atlas.

Many organizations have a need to create these map books or atlases. For example, a utility company might want to generate a map book detailing their assets across a service area. A map book for this utility company could include a series of maps, each at a large scale, along with a title page, and an overview map. These resources would then be joined together into a single document that could be printed or distributed as a pdf file.

ArcGIS Desktop provides all the tools you need to create map books in printed or Adobe PDF format using data driven pages. At its simplest, anyone can create a map book by manually printing a title page, then some map pages, and anything else they want to include in the compiled document. But this process is made more reasonable and efficient when software can automate the process. ArcGIS provides that capability through a combination of Data Driven Pages and arcpy.mapping Python scripts.

Introduction to Programming ArcGIS Pro with Python

ArcGIS Pro is Esri’s new next generation desktop GIS application. This innovative 64-bit application is able to take full advantage of all the latest computer hardware making it more efficient and effective than ArcMap for performing GIS functions.
