Practical training focused on improving safety and reducing collisions at highway-rail grade crossings

RailTAP will:

  • Educate workers and the public about highway-rail grade crossing and right-of-way risks
  • Promote safety practices to reduce crashes and injuries
  • Provide local, accessible training to participants with an interest in rail safety

RailTAP training is for anyone involved with at-grade rail crossings including utility and construction workers, public works staff, municipal and state employees, first responders, engineers and planners, community stakeholders, students, and the general public.

  • RailTAP classes are FREE
  • Professional Development Hours (PDHs) available
  • Agency-only trainings available at your location upon request

RailTAP Advisory Board

RailTAP is supported by an Advisory Board representing freight/passenger/light rail industry experts, federal, state and local government agencies, non-profit and private sector stakeholders, public works membership organizations, local agencies and safety initiatives.

Technical Assistance Programs

RailTAP joins two other existing Technical Assistance Programs administered at NC State University:

NC AirTAP

RailTAP is funded by the Federal Railroad Administration’s Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program. It is delivered through a public-private partnership between NC State University and the North Carolina Railroad Company to deliver advanced safety training and resources.
