Dr. Billy Williams, recently appointed as Director of ITREDr. Billy Williams is a professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering. He joined N.C. State in 2002 as an assistant professor after three years on the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology. A North Carolina native, Dr. Williams earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from NC State and his doctoral degree from the University of Virginia.

Dr. Williams is a recognized expert in the areas of analytical and simulation modeling of traffic operations and transportation networks, intelligent transport systems, and the application of rigorous statistical methods to a broad range of transportation applications, including traffic condition forecasting and traffic flow modeling.

Prior to entering academia, Dr. Williams served four years active duty in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps and over five years as a consulting engineer with the firm of Kimley-Horn and Associates. He has collaborated closely with ITRE researchers since joining the NC State faculty and looks forward to helping ITRE’s talented and visionary research family continue to build on its well-deserved reputation as a national and international leader in transportation innovation.

Thank you also to Dr. Downey Brill for serving as the Interim Director of ITRE for the past two years. His leadership has been invaluable in both providing continuity for ITRE and moving the organization forward. Dr. Brill will continue to work closely with Dr. Williams during the transition period.
