Case Studies

The Operations Research and Education Laboratory (OREd) has worked with numerous K-12 school systems on a variety of student reassignment and planning issues. The following case studies illustrate how OREd used models driven by objective data to offer solutions to three school systems that faced unique challenges.

• The Tupelo Public School District in Tupelo, Mississippi had five major goals, one of which was that the schools be demographically balanced.
• The Wake County Public School System in Raleigh, North Carolina was looking at a dramatic increase in student population growth, long range school planning, and school siting.
• The Rock Hill School District Three in Rock Hill, South Carolina had been dealing with school redistricting and was trying to achieve demographically balanced school attendance areas.
