Context Sensitive Solutions Summer Academy 2006

2006 CSS Academy ParticipantsIn cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, CTE conducts a unique, experiential summer program for junior- and senior-level undergraduate students interested in careers in transportation and the environment. The CSS Summer Academy introduces students to the principles of context sensitive solutions. Moreover, it also illustrates how CSS concepts are being applied at various levels of transportation planning, project development, construction, operations and maintenance. Dr. John Stone and Dr. Joe Hummer, both from the Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department at NC State University, led the 2006 Academy through coursework and case study activities.

In addition to classroom instruction, students participate in field trips that showcase real-life applications of CSS. Throughout the summer (May - August), students also work as paid interns with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. They are placed in positions that directly address environmental concerns in transportation and are required to research and write a case study related to their work assignments; see CSS Academy Schedule 2006.

In 2006, the students of the CSS Summer Academy completed their internships on August 16 and provided oral presentations of their experiential work activities to a group of local area practitioners and faculty researchers. In addition to a paid salary, the students received a CSS certificate of accomplishment and the opportunity to circulate their resumes to agencies and organizations seeking new hires who possess a broader understanding of transportation and environmental issues.
