ITRE Director Visits South Korea for Research, Reunion and RecruitmentMarch 7, 2008 Raleigh, NC - Nagui Rouphail, director of the Institute for Transportation Research and Education, traveled to South Korea recently to make a number of presentations as well as reunite with two ITRE-supported Ph.D. graduates from NC State. While there, he also recruited potential graduate students from transportation programs around the country. Rouphail met with Jae Joon Lee and Jin Ki Eom, two former Korean Ph.D. students that were supported by ITRE. Both alumni work in transportation research in South Korea: Lee at the Korea Transport Institute and Eom at the National Railroad Administration. Part of Rouphail’s trip also focused on recruiting potential graduate students from the different organizations he visited. The Korea trip centered on a Ubiquitous Transportation (u-T) network meeting and seminar. Two current ITRE-supported Ph.D. students are working on the u-T project: Hyejung Hu and Kosok Chae. This is the first year of a three-year project. During this first year, ITRE researchers plan to evaluate the network-wide benefits of u-T, which is intended to provide real-time information on a large network. Rouphail also presented a seminar on “Recent Developments in Highway Capacity Research in the United States” in three different locations: The Seoul Development Institute, the Korean Transport Institute and the University of Hanyang in Ansan. The Institute for Transportation Research and Education, administered by North Carolina State University, is a non-profit organization that conducts research, education, and technical assistance projects on a wide variety of surface transportation issues with the goals of solving problems and creating new products, better services, and smarter workers. ITRE is located on NCSU's Centennial Campus. For more information about ITRE and related programs, please visit our Web site at www.itre.ncsu.edu. |
