Since its inception in 2000, the Transportation Founders Fund (TFF) has successfully awarded student scholarships, provided professional development opportunities for its members along with students and transportation professionals, and hosted an annual banquet for members and their guests to discuss current transportation issues and to interact with top transportation decision makers at the national and state levels.
We are proud that since 2000, TFF has awarded about $18,000 in graduate scholarships for Civil Engineering students at NC State. Further, TFF has provided continuing educational opportunities for students and transportation professionals alike by offering six technical seminars on topics ranging from air quality and land use planning to roundabouts and freight transportation.
In addition, TFF has been a consistent supporter of the student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). Every year since 2000, TFF has donated $500 to the ITE student chapter to help offset travel expenses to attend the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), an important venue for our students’ continuing professional development.
The TFF has also contributed to staff development activities at the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) by providing funds to enable ITRE to create, implement and update an institute-wide strategic plan for the first time since its inception in 1978. The plan provides a roadmap to ITRE’s efforts toward providing state of the art surface transportation research and training in the areas of highway operations, public transportation, pupil transportation and environmental transportation issues.
In summary, we believe that TFF is having a strong and positive impact on the transportation program here at NC State. By providing scholarships to transportation students and connecting them with senior transportation professionals and researchers through our various events, their educational experience is enriched and their outlook on the transportation profession enhanced.
