Special Projects
Support Services for the FHWA Domestic Scan Tour on Successful Wetland Mitigation Programs
CTE is providing logistical support and report documentation for the FHWA domestic scan tour on successful
wetland mitigation programs. The tour will include site visits of eight state transportation departments in
the spring of 2005. The purpose of the tour is to observe and document innovations in wetlands banking and other
mitigation strategies. CTE will prepare the final report for publication by FHWA and will help develop and implement
a technology transfer plan for disseminating the scan tour results.
Production of Educational Video on the Environmental Partnerships and Cooperative Accomplishments
of the North Carolina Department of Transportation
CTE is currently under contract with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to produce a short
video explaining the department's recent environmental accomplishments and their contribution
to building a strong foundation for addressing the state's growth-related concerns of the next three
decades. The video is intended for NC decision makers (i.e., state and local government
officials, legislative officials, and business leaders) who are directly involved with
transportation decision-making and its implications for North Carolina's growth agenda. The
purpose of the video is to reveal current successes at NCDOT that underscore the importance
of cooperation among all the agencies and stakeholders charged with the responsibility of
meeting the public's demand for safe and efficient transportation services that also
preserve the integrity and vitality of NC's communities and natural resources.
Wildlife, Fisheries and Transportation Web Gateway and Research Database
CTE developed and maintains the WFT
Web Gateway, a resource for transportation agencies and stakeholder
organizations who seek access to current research, best practices,
policy issues, training opportunities, and events on the relationship
between surface transportation development and wildlife and fisheries
ecology. The gateway provides a starting point for information on
these topics. It includes a link to CTE's Wildlive
and Transportation Research Database, a keyword-searchable online database of published reports and articles,
including papers and presentations of the International
Conference on Ecology and Transportation.
Web Documentation of the Wildlife Crossing Structure Field Course (Banff National Park - Alberta, Canada)
CTE was a co-sponsor of this three-day field course (conducted September
10-12, 2002), which was also sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration,
the USDA Forest Service, and the Western Transportation Institute
of Montana State University. WTI served as lead organizer. CTE documented
the results of the field course and developed a
Web summary for course participants and other interested parties.
The course drew a total of 55 participants, representing primarily
FHWA headquarters and division offices as well as state transportation
agencies. The objectives of the three-day course, which included a
field trip into Banff National Park to view crossing structures in
place along the Parks Canada Highway, were to: (1) discuss wildlife
crossing structure considerations (e.g., planning, permitting and
streamlining, cost, placement, design and landscaping, maintenance,
monitoring and effectiveness), (2) discuss how to incorporate wildlife
mitigation techniques into transportation programs, and (3) discuss
how to “spread the word” about promising techniques, planning practices,
and successful interdisciplinary partnerships.
The 2005 Wildlife Crossing Structures Field Course was conducted
April 11-13, 2005 in Payson, AZ. Visit Rockies
Field Course section of the WFT Gateway for more information.
