| CTE’s education program introduces
the environmental aspects of surface transportation development
to a 21st century workforce that reflects a broad variety of disciplines,
including engineering, environmental sciences, social sciences,
and economics. CTE responds to the continuing education needs of
current professionals, and contributes to the development of course
materials, internships, and experiential work opportunities that
are helping to prepare the next-generation professional.
- Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS)
Training for Professionals
CTE has developed and is currently delivering training to North Carolina Department of Transportation staff (as well as practitioners outside the department)
on the principles and applications of context sensitive solutions in all functional areas of transportation: from planning,
to project development, to maintenance and operations.
- Training Course Development
Developing new courses, both classroom and web-based, on transportation and environmental topics - particularly those with a strong inter-agency focus - is
an emerging focus area within CTE's education program.
- CSS 2006 Summer Academy for Undergraduates, 2004 Summer Academy
Undergraduates compete nationally to participate in this 8-week program that provides a paid internship at
the North Carolina Department of Transportation, including a two-week certificate course in CSS principles and practices
relating to transportation.
- Graduate Engineering Course on Context Sensitive Solutions
CTE developed this graduate course on context sensitive solutions (CSS) principles and practices for use in civil and environmental engineering (CEE) graduate courses, after being awarded a contract from the Federal Highway Administration. View 2006 Course materials and associated files.
- CTE Student of the Year
Each year CTE recognizes the achievements of a graduate student pursuing research in transportation and the environment as its "Student of the Year."
