Newspage Welcome to ADC50's Newspage - an online news and information compendium! This feature is intended to keep site visitors informed about Committee events and current news concerning historic preservation research in transportation. Everyone is encouraged to submit news articles for consideration to Mary Alfson (or call (267) 652-7123) or Tony Opperman, ADC50 chair. We also want to hear from you about issues that need to be covered, even if someone else is the "reporter." If you're wondering about the status of a particular research project or initiative, then ask the question and the Newspage will answer it! TRB Annual Meeting Despite the state of the economy, the 2009 TRB Annual Meeting was very well attended and ADC50 had one of its largest programs by sponsoring or co-sponsoring two workshops, six presentation sessions, and a poster session. Highlights of the program include Vibration Effects of Transportation Projects on Historic Properties (workshop), Cost of Aesthetics in Workhorse Bridge Design (session), Case Studies of Successful Steel Bridge Projects (session), and Considering Indirect and Cumulative Effects on Historic Properties: Challenges and Opportunities in Environmental Analysis (session). The Committee is still in the process of collecting copies of the presentations and will make those available as soon as possible. The 2010 TRB Annual Meeting will be held in Washington, DC, on January 10-14 with the theme Investing in Our Transportation Future - BOLD Ideas to Meet BIG Challenges. More information on what will be the 89th Annual Meeting will be available through Committee communications. One important date to remember is that ideas for proposed Annual Meeting workshops and sessions are due on June 1, 2009. Session ideas do not need to be fully developed by June 1, just the title and abstract. Workshops, however, need to be fully developed by June 1. Please submit any Annual Meeting workshop or session ideas to Amy Squitieri, Programs Subcommittee Chair. ADC50 Mid-Year Meeting Please join us for our 2009 mid-year meeting in Sheridan, Wyoming, hosted by the Wyoming DOT, on July 19-22! Our meeting will be held in conjunction with the mid-year meeting of TRB's ABE80 Native American Transportation Issues Committee and will be a great opportunity for learning and information exchange about transportation, historic preservation, and Native American issues from a western perspective. A preliminary program is now available and will be distributed through the ADC50 listserv. Research Needs Statements The Committee now has four Research Needs Statements in TRB's Research Needs Database (see the homepage for list and links). The latest, Performance Analysis for Section 106 Programmatic Agreements, was added in late March 2009. Thanks to Amy Squitieri, Bob Newbery, and Tim Smith for pulling this together! Several additional statements are being worked on, so check the database periodically for the latest contributions. NCHRP Funding Likely for Post-War Housing Context Development AASHTO's
Standing Committee on the Environment submitted a problem statement on
Developing Regional Historic Contexts for Post-WWII Housing for potential
funding under the FY 2010 National Cooperative Highway Research Program
(NCHRP), a topic of mutual concern to ADC50. AASHTO's Standing Committee
on Research approved that problem statement earlier this year and final
approval is expected from AASHTO's Board of Directors. The statement can
be viewed
and additional updates on the status of this project's status will be
posted on the Newspage and circulated through
the ADC50 listserv.
