Paper, Poster, and Panel Sessions - Monday and Tuesday, July 20-21
- Historic
Highways and Bridges. From local roads to transcontinental highways,
this session will focus on identification of historic highways and heritage
corridors, internal and external threats to these resources, management
and interpretive tools, and evaluation of historic bridge preservation
efforts and recommendations for the future.
- Mid-20th
Century Architecture. This session addresses methodologies for documentation
and evaluation of a variety of post-World War II architecture - residential,
commercial, and public works. The development and use of multiple historic
contexts for these resources will also be discussed.
- Best
Practices in Tribal Consultation. This session is a facilitated
panel discussion between historic preservation professionals and Tribal
representatives to identify what really constitutes "best practices"
for legally mandated consultation and coordination. Specific topics
to be addressed include: 1) government-to-government vs. project specific
consultation; 2) delegation of responsibilities; 3) consultation or
public involvement; 4) confidentiality; 5) intellectual property; 6)
cultural sensitivity; and 7) programmatic approaches.
- DOT
contributions to Ancient History. Several states are celebrating
50 years and more of archaeological work on highway projects. This session
takes a coast-to-coast perspective on DOT archaeology, ranging from
synthetic overviews to project-specific contributions gained from work
on front of the bulldozers.
- Historic
Preservation and Transportation Planning. This session is a facilitated
panel discussion focusing on the results of the recent NCHRP 25-25,
Task 49, which addressed integration of historic preservation and transportation
planning. Representatives from State DOTs will discuss implementation
of specific programs, with outside perspective from SHPOs. The panel
will also focus on data needs and lessons learned.
- It's
the Economy! This session is a facilitated panel discussion about:
(1) the current and foreseeable economic impacts to Transportation Cultural
Resources (CR) Programs; (2) best management practices/ adaptive responses
to these impacts; (3) impacts of the American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act to CR Programs, and (4) how both the economic downturn and responses
to it might impact or influence how CR programs might go about their
business over the next few years. The session with conclude with an
open discussion to propose research projects that could facilitate how
state DOTs might better address these challenges next year or over the
next few years.
