Mission

The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is a university-based institute committed to leadership in the study of surface and air transportation issues through fostering analytical thinking, integrating technology in education and research, serving as a catalyst for problem solving, and cultivating professionals and students dedicated to excellence in transportation.

Beginnings

The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) was initially established in 1976 by the North Carolina General Assembly (Session Laws 1975, Second Session, Chapter 983, Section 57). It authorized the University of North Carolina (UNC) Board of Governors to create a Council on Transportation Research and Education to accomplish several tasks:

  1. Create a management structure to coordinate and merge the highway safety programs of the UNC Highway Safety Research Center and the National Driving Center, Inc.;
  2. Represent all interests within the University of North Carolina in transportation research and education; and
  3. Establish the Institute for Transportation Research and Education to facilitate the development of a broad range of transportation research and education programs involving organizations within the University which have related programs.

The Charter for ITRE was approved by the Council for Transportation Research and Education (today known as the ITRE Advisory Council) on October 13, 1977, and by the Board of Governors on February 12, 1978 which was ITRE's official start date within the University of North Carolina system. The Charter was subsequently modified May 23, 1995.
